Souhardya Sengupta Wins 2024 Dempster Prize
The Department of Statistics would like to congratulate Souhardya Sengupta, a PhD student entering his 3rd year, on winning the 2024 Dempster Award for his exceptional paper titled "Leveraging Sparsity in the Gaussian Linear Model for Improved Inference" with Associate Professor Lucas Janson. In the paper, they develop novel LASSO-based methods for coefficient testing, confidence interval construction, and variable selection in the Gaussian linear model.
The Dempster fund was started in 2012 by Stephen Blyth, a 1992 PhD alumnus, in honor of his advisor, faculty emeritus Arthur P. Dempster. The purpose of the award is to “support and recognize promising graduate students within the Department of Statistics, in particular those who have made significant contributions to theoretical or foundational research in statistics.”
