Probabilitas Seminar: Tudor Manole

Date and Time

December 2, 2025
01:30PM - 02:30PM EST

Location

Science Center 705

The Probabilitas Seminar series focuses on high-dimensional problems that combine statistics, probability, artificial intelligence, information theory, computer science, and other related fields. The upcoming seminar takes place on Tuesday, December 2, at 1:30pm in Science Center 705. This week's speaker will be Tudor Manole, postdoc of the MIT Statistics and Data Science Center.

How much can we learn from quantum random circuit sampling?

The last two decades have witnessed quantum computing technologies increasingly move from theoretical proposals to functioning experimental platforms. A central challenge in building large-scale quantum devices is the presence of hardware errors, which must be identified and quantified before they can be mitigated. In this talk, we introduce a statistical perspective on the problem of error estimation in quantum devices. Building upon a technique introduced by Google Quantum AI known as random circuit sampling (RCS), we develop statistical methods for estimating the location and nature of errors in randomized quantum circuits. The model governing this framework is a high-dimensional discrete latent variable model, which shares common features with mixed-membership models. We establish the information-theoretic limits of parameter estimation in this model, allowing us to show that reliable estimation is possible even for large-scale quantum devices.

This talk will not assume any background on quantum computing. Based on joint work with Daniel K. Mark, Wenjie Gong, Bingtian Ye, Yury Polyanskiy, and Soonwon Choi.
