PhD student Niloy Biswas given 2021 Laplace Award by American Statistical Association

Niloy Biswas, a PhD student at the Harvard’s Department of Statistics, was given the 2021 Laplace Award by the American Statistical Association. The ASA wrote “Niloy was selected for his paper titled "Coupled Markov chain Monte Carlo for high-dimensional regression with Half-t priors" authored with Anirban Bhattacharya (Texas A&M), Pierre E. Jacob (Harvard), and James E. Johndrow (University of Pennsylvania). Xiao-Li Meng is Niloy's advisor. ” More details are at:

Professor Susan Murphy wins in the 2021 Van Wijngaarden Award

Professor Susan Murphy, the Mallinckrodt Professor of Statistics and of Computer Science, has been awarded the 2021 Van Wijngaarden Award for improving decision making in health. The award is presented by the CWI every 5 years to a mathematician and computer scientist of special significance. The announcement is below:

Professor Blitzstein sets a new enrollment record

Professor Joseph K. Blitzstein has set a new record for his celebrated Stat110 course, Introduction to Probability. This year his course enrollment is 684. This is the highest ever for a Statistics course at Harvard and we think it is the highest ever for any course at Harvard College which has a calculus prerequisite. Congratulations and thanks Joe!
