Neil Shephard appointed Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science

Professor Neil Shephard, chair of the Statistics Department, has been appointed by Harvard University the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science with effect from 1st July 2017. He will continue to be a faculty member in both the Department of Economics and the Department of Statistics.

This professorship, established through the generous gift of the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Foundation, recognizes an outstanding scientist in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Two Hoopes Prizes for Undergraduate Senior Thesis Writers

Each year Harvard makes awards to the strongest the writers of Senior Theses. This year two Statistics concentrators were given this honor:

Loboda, Katherine for her submission entitled “From Mendel’s Peas to P-Values: A Network Approach to Understanding Complex Disease Heritability”—supervised and nominated by Professor John Quackenbush

Li, Catherine Yiwen for her submission entitled “Novel methods for cross-population prediction of gene expression”—supervised and nominated by Professor Alexander Gusev
