Senior Lecturer Mark Glickman Brings New England Symposium on Statistics in Sports to Harvard

The New England Symposium on Statistics in Sports is a meeting of statisticians and quantitative analysts connected with sports teams, sports media, and universities to discuss common problems of interest in statistical modeling and analysis of sports data. The symposium format is a mixture of invited talks, a poster session, and a panel discussion. It was held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, and will return to the Harvard campus in 2019. PhD student Ryan Lee wins Boston Datathon with 3 colleagues

G2 PhD student Ryan Lee, two Ph.D. students from the Harvard Biostatistics program (Siyuan Ma, Boyu Ren), and a Ph.D. student from MIT (Eric Alt) took home the first place at the Boston Citadel-Correlation One Datathon! Around 700 people initially entered this competition. Their prize was a $20,000 check. They now go on to compete at the Global competition on 27 Nov 2017. Congratulations Ryan!

Dr. Marie-Abele Bind wins a John Harvard Distinguished Science Fellowship

The Harvard Division of Science recently appointed Dr. Marie-Ab̬le Bind as a John Harvard Distinguished Science Fellow. This Fellowship program is detailed at https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/jhdsfprogram/current-fellows. Marie-Ab̬le Bind will continue to be an Associate of our Department, where she has been building her Lab. Marie-Ab̬le Bind is an environmental biostatistician interested in health effects from environmental exposures. Her research is funded by the NIH Early Independence Award program. Stat 110 smashes enrollment record

Joe Blitzstein' Stat 110 course, Introduction to Probability (which is based on his book https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Probability-Chapman-Statistical-Science/dp/1466575573 joint with Jessica Hwang), hit a new landmark in September 2016. The enrollment for the class was 590, which is the first time a Statistics Department class with a calculus prerequisite has ever been larger than 500 in its history (we are searching the books to see if any course in Harvard' history needing calculus has been larger).
